Black Star made their SNL debut performing two new tracks from their latest album, No Fear of Time
Black Star (which is yasin bey and Talib Kweli) just made their debut on Saturday Night Live.
The rappers, who were invited by their friend and podcast partner Dave Chappelle, performed two songs from their latest album No Fear of Time, which is their first new album in 24 times. They performed “So Be It” — which they just dropped a video for a couple of days ago — and “The Main Thing Is to Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing.”
Joining them in the background was Madlib, who produced the entire No Fear of Time album, which can only be found on Luminary.
Kweli recently spoke to Consequence about “So Be It.” He said:
“The song is a lyrical exercise, bars on bars, but we are not rhyming for the sake of riddling, as the great Chuck D might say. This song is a call to action. It’s a prayer. It’s a manifesto.”
He also talked about performing on SNL, adding:
“I can’t recall seeing a more hip-hop, a more independent group than Black Star to ever do SNL, so I’m definitely excited to represent for the culture.”
On Friday, Blue Note Entertainment Group and Luminary announced that Black Star will be performing at Sony Hall on Tuesday, November 15th. What’s really cool is the fact that it will be a late night show — with the show starting at midnight.
